Hello, it's Minnow and I will be covering the course AP Human Geography. This class is usually a freshman level AP depending on the school, however, it can be a difficult AP due to the transition to this level of rigor.
In this lesson, rather than preparing each chapter seperately, I will be providing insights into the connections that need to be made to better understand the class and the exam.
The test can be broken up into 2 sections:
60 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and 3 Free Response Questions (FRQs)
AP Human Geography Score Calculator: Albert.io
The test is an accumulative score of 120: 60 MCQ points and 60 FRQ Points. Each FRQ has a total of 7 point with each of these individual point contributing around 3 to 4 points toward the total composite score.
To score a 3 you need: 58/120
To score a 4 you need: 70/120
To score a 5 you need: 84/120
Not too difficult right?
AP Human Geo can generally be broken into 7 units (13 chapters), but some of these can be grouped. My reference will be pulled from the textbook The Cultural Landscape: An Introduction to Human Geography -Twelfth Edition -AP Edition by James M. Rubenstein. Although it's not perfect, it is a solid textbook to provide a frame of reference.
UNIT 1 - THINKING GEOGRAPHICALLY
Chapter 1
This unit introduces the very basics and fundamentals of AP Human Geography. There are only a few things you have to take notice in this chapter.
Globalization
Hearth
Relocation Diffusion, Hierarchal Diffusion, Contagious Diffusion
Distance-Decay
Environmental Determinism
Although these are not all the vocab terms, they are essential in providing the foundation to future units. The main takeaway is how does globalization and all these cultures transition from their hearths to the future through technological advancements.
For example, Buddhism begun in Ancient India and through contagious diffusion the ideology was spread through Southeast Asia. As society becomes more advanced, we make posts about Buddhism which leads to its ideology being spread all the way to the United States.
Thus it can be ordered like this:
Ancient India -Buddhism (Hearth) -> Southeast Asia (Contagious Diffusion) -> United States (Relocation Diffusion + Globalization) -> Distance Decay through technology too.
UNIT 2 - POPULATION AND MIGRATION PATTERNS AND PROCESSES
UNIT 3 - CULTURAL PATTERNS AND PROCESSES
UNIT 4 - POLITICAL PATTERNS AND PROCESSES
UNIT 5 - AGRICULTURAL AND RURAL LAND-USE PATTERNS AND PROCESSES
UNIT 6 - CITIES AND URBAN LAND-USE PATTERNS AND PROCESSES
UNIT 7 - INDUSTRIAL AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PATTERNS AND PROCESSES

BASICS:
AP Human Geo has 3 FRQs with each having 7 points. These points can be identified by the written question. For example, questions with the term "Identify" are worth 1 point, whereas questions with the term "Describe" or "Explain" are worth 2 points.
Generally, the FRQs will follow a process of thinking with each question tying to the next.
TIPS:
Always write the letter of the question and then answer.
This is a very important tip because this allows you to approach the FRQ section by section. If you don't know the answer to one, you can always skip and just use the next letter. This allows for a more organized setup for the graders to analyze your work.
YAP!!!
If you have the time, try to write as much as you can. Even if you're saying almost the same thing, it can help increase your odds of hitting the key term that would earn you the point. As long as you don't contradict yourself, then this method should work!
Avoid repetition of answers (unless asked)
This is an important note because this could cause you to lose points. For example, if the question asks you to describe one way humans have spread more quickly to other countries, an example answer would be chain migration. However, try not to use chain migration for any other future answers. Following the example, if the third part of the question asks what methods has led more Indians to migrate to America, chain migration shouldn't be used again as an answer. An appropriate response would be globalization and facilitation of better jobs. It's vital to not double-dip responses.
We are nearing the end here! The biggest thing to understand specifically about the History APs is how to make connections. This is essential to comprehending the material, it's structures, and how it can be tied into the FRQs.
Today, I will be showing you my favorite brainstorming activity I do before almost every conceptual based AP.
First, choose a random country. For example, I'll start off with Vietnam.
Vietnam is a Stage 3 country in the DTM. I can now relate the DTM to the ETM. Knowing Vietnam is an agricultural-based country, I can now branch off into its trade with specific countries. Well, trade is a essential factor due to globalization. Globalization then connects into acculturation and the facilitation of technology. The technological parts are created from certain countries. Etc.
This list could keep going on until you've combined every single vocab word from each unit. Although it doesn't have to be super niche topics or examples, understanding and tying each general broad concept to another is a way to show your mastery.
Here's an example I used for my students!!
My favorite resource for AP courses. They pull questions directly from a wide group of textbooks and Collegeboard pages. The practice questions will split them into 10 so it is a good way of studying and timing yourself for each chunk. It is also free!!
This is a solid resource for reviewing the information and material of each unit. Usually the school pays for this resource, but there are free demo questions to look at.

Before Heimler, this guy was the one who saved my AP score. He covers solid reviews and concepts. An additional thing to note is that right before the exam, there will be full live reviews where he will cover all of AP Human Geo over the course of a few days.
LIVE REVIEWS
These are full course reviews that are dropped around 2 to 3 days before the exam. These can be found on CollegeBoard Youtube or most general AP Human Geo Youtubers. You don't necessarily have to watch all of them, but their helpful bits to pull from and sometimes even free pdf reviews that are linked. This is definitely one of the resources to use when taking your last moments to prepare for the real exam.
Slightly outdated, but the concepts remain the same!
